Welcome to Beiargrotter / Beiarcaves!
Beiargrotter in Løvstad is situated 3 km inside the beautiful and fertile Gråtådalen, a side valley to Beiardalen with the popular salmon river "Beiarelva". Here you will find both Løvstadgrotta and Rønnahola along with the other 68 localized caves in the valley.
Quite a lot of material about the Løvstad Cave do exist. Hans Mikael Hansen discovered the Løvstad Cave in 1862, only eight years old. At the time Hans Hansen discovered Løvstad cave there were neither cars or roads in Ådalen. Only a small track leading up the valley. Hans Hansen was on a long walk from Øvernes. We do not doubt that the trip must have been both tiresome and long. In addition he was herding some livestock in Gråtådalen. Suddenly he discovered a great hole in the mountain. Inside the grotto he found a lake. Hans is Sakarias Løvstad father. Sakarias startet offering guided tours in the Løvstad Cave in 1923. At the time they lacked the sort of equipment we use today. The air temperature inside the cave is approximately four degrees Celsius, and the water temperature is not more than two degrees Celsius. It must have been a thrill!
